The thematic focus of the publication is coverage of up-to-date theoretical and applied problems of Criminalistics, the use the results of the latest methods and methodologies for conducting forensic examinations, applying special knowledge in legal proceedings and investigative practice, legal education and staff trainings, in particular forensic experts.

The purpose and objectives of the publication are publication of results of scientific and dissertation researches in Criminalistics, Forensic Science and related sciences, promotion and exchange of experience in the field of legal science as well as staff training of forensic intuitions, discussion of drafts law, spread of information on events of a scientific nature (feedbacks and peer reviews, personalities of scholars, dissertations’ defense, new legal publications, scientific events – conferences, workshops, contests).

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The history of the beginning of the scientific and methodological collection “Criminalistics and Forensics” begins in the 1930s of the last century.

At the beginning of 1936, a decision was made and the possibility was given to the Institutes of scientific and forensic expertise to publish information on the results of research works.

The first step in accomplishing this task was the publication of the first collection of scientific works by the staff of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa institutes of scientific and forensic expertise, which was published in autumn 1937 under the title “Criminalistics and Forensics” with a circulation of 1,500 copies.

The Editorial Board of the collection includes B. I. Vakhlis, the former director of Kyiv Institute, professors N. N. Bokarius, director of Kharkiv Institute and M. P. Makarenko, director of Odesa Institute. There were also included scientific publications of the following professors: S.M. Matvieiev, O.K. Sudomyr, V.Ye. Ozetskyi and famous forensic experts: B.R. Kyrychynskyi, K.Ye. Zavadynskyi, N. M. Ziuskina, S.I. Tykhenko etc.

At the end of the Second World War, in the late 40s of the twentieth century, three collections of works by employees of Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of forensic Expertise were published under the editorship of D. Kh. Panasiuk, B. I. Vakhlis, B. R. Kyrychynskyi, and S. I. Tykhenko with the title “Criminalistics and Scientific Forensics”. These publishes included the scientific achievements of forensic experts, namely  N. M. Ziuskin, B. R. Kyrychynskyi, E. Yu. Braichevskyi, M. G. Bogatyrova, T. H. Bordonos, V. L. Pavlov, T. I. Barabash, T. Ye. Hetman, A. M. Hamburg, S. I. Tykhenko, I. Ya. Fridman and others. The scientific works published in these collections certainly helped the investigative and judicial authorities in their practical work.

In 1957 the collection of scientific articles “Criminalistics and Forensics” was published, in which contained reports of the joint scientific conference of Kyiv and Kharkiv Scientific Research Institutes of Forensic Expertise of the Ministry of Justice of the Ukrainian SSR. The conference was held on October 23-26, 1956 in Kyiv. It was attended by researchers and forensic lecturers from Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia as well as forensic doctors, investigators, prosecutors and courts participants.

Most of the scientific articles in the collection were devoted to the issues of further improving the techniques and methods of forensic research of material evidence.

The collection was edited by V. K. Lysychenko and V. P. Kolmakov.

The 60s of the twentieth century were marked by the beginning of the formation of an interdepartmental scientific and methodological collection “Criminalistics and Forensics”.

The aforementioned collection began to be published since 1964. Its publication is guaranteed by Part 4 of Article 8 of the Law of Ukraine “On Forensic Expertise” and also determines the scientific and information form, which will contribute to the scientific and methodological support of forensic activity.

The collection contains the results of scientific research in the field of theory and history of forensic examination, development and improvement of methods of various types of forensic research. The actual issues of forensic tactics and methods of investigation of crimes are considered as well.

The publication is designed for forensic experts, employees of pre-trial investigation bodies, judges, lecturers, post-graduate students, students of law, medical higher educational institutions.

Printed copies of the aforementioned edition (mandatory copies) are sent annually to V.I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine.

The publication is indexed on the platforms “Index Copernicus”, “Google scholar”, etc.

Electronic versions of the collection’s articles are presented on the portal in the information resource “Scientific Periodicals of Ukraine” from 2013 and on the website of the publication.
