Abstract
In this article, the toxicology of counterfeit alcohol based on ethanol is presented. It can be concluded that the most dangerous compounds in alcoholic beverages are aldehydes — acetaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, and furfural. Another group of compounds, which are highly dangerous, is higher alcohols (isoamyl, isobutyl, isopropyl, propyl, butyl, etc.) containing methanol as an admixture, which is difficult to separate during the distillation process. As is known, methanol increases the toxicity of ethanol. This article also reviews the results of research into the toxic properties of home-brewed alcoholic drinks, as well as the research results of alcohol surrogates containing ethanol in concentrations of approximately 45–96% (technical liquids, household chemicals, medications). The mortality of consumers of these liquids is higher than that of people who consume an equivalent amount of ethanol in the form of licensed alcohol.
