Abstract

The article reveals the main aspects and problems of using forensic handwriting examination methods. The purpose of the study is to analyze existing forensic handwriting examination methods, highlight the main problematic issues of their use in the practical activities of forensic experts and present recommendations for improving the results of the study. In particular, the classification of these methods and their common aspects is given; it is indicated that the forensic handwriting examination method can be presented in the form of an information model, and as a complex organizational system, this model can combine other models ‒ elements (subsystems). It is noted that the vast majority of forensic handwriting examination methods were developed on the basis of acquired experience, using empirical and theoretical research methods. At the same time, a significant problem is that the existing methods of forensic handwriting examinations, in particular the mathematical apparatus used, do not allow for a full quantitative assessment of the results of the study, and therefore, to determine the objectivity of the conclusion (conclusions) of the forensic expert (experts) and the consistency of these conclusions regarding the identification (establish-ment) of the person who created the handwritten text, digital records or signature. The practice of expert research requires the use of a more advanced analytical tool that would be based on mathematical dependencies and relationships, and therefore allow for the necessary adequacy to describe the object or process under investigation. The scientific novelty of the study lies in substantiating the need to improve existing methods of forensic handwriting examination by using mathematical modeling (mathematical models and algorithms), as an important tool for quantitative evaluation of research results, which should ensure objectivity, accuracy and consistency of conclusions of forensic experts during commission forensic handwriting examinations, and accordingly, the effectiveness of these examinations as a whole. The conclusions emphasize the importance of improving the mathematical component of forensic handwriting examination methods and using mathematical modeling for this purpose. Attention is focused on the need to assess the consistency of forensic experts’ conclusions and use appropriate research methods for this purpose, in particular Thomas Saatchi’s Hierarchy Analysis Method, which is based on mathematical modeling.
