Abstract
Topaz is a widely studied gemstone valued for its diverse colors, high clarity, and physical durability. This paper examines the key gemological characteristics of topaz, including its chemical composition, crystal structure, optical properties, and typical inclusions. Special attention is given to factors influencing its quality and transparency, such as the presence of inclusions, structural defects, and trace elements. The aim of the study is to examine the features of topaz identification in rough materials during gemmological forensic examination, as well as to demonstrate the characteristic diagnostic features of simulated, synthetic, or treated stones. The methodological basis is complex gemological and mineralogical research methods, including visual diagnostics, microscopic studies, study of physical and optical properties, as well as comparative analysis of natural and refined topaz samples. The results obtained can be used to improve the accuracy of jewelry raw material evaluation. The conclusions of the study established that topazes are characterized by a significant variety of color shades, physical properties and genetic features of formation. The influence of impurities, natural irradiation and heat treatment on the formation of the color of the mineral was analyzed. It was determined that the change in the color of topazes is directly related to defects in the crystal lattice, the action of radiation processes and temperature conditions.
