Abstract
The article analyzes the works of foreign authors on the study of handwriting executed by persons intoxicated by alcohol, highlights the main content of these studies, and compares their results while indicating the possible reasons for discrepancies. In particular, the research results of A. Rebin, G. Blair, G. Elbel, C. Tripp, F. and G. Weinberg, F. Fluchiger, K. Puri, I. Herhov, K. Handel, G. Dennemark, D. Purtell, A. Hilton, M. Stinson, A. Safyanovski, R. Foley and E. L. Miller, N. Galbraith, N. Asicioglu and F. Turan, E. S. Geller, S. Clarke and M. Kelsher, J. Phillips, R. Muller, and F. Ogeil are presented, along with certain methodological features of their investigations.As a result of analyzing these developments, it was found that over the past fifty-plus years, the foreign literature on the handwriting of intoxicated individuals has been represented by theoretical, practical, and experimental studies that are currently being actively conducted using statistical and dynamic research methods as well as computing. Alongside objective approaches, the presence of an exclusively original subjective component was also noted in some studies. It was determined that these studies account for the dependence of handwriting on various individual characteristics of the subjects. A generalization of experimental studies conducted by foreign authors revealed that handwriting features vary in correlation with changes in blood alcohol concentration.
It is concluded that the characteristic changes identified by different authors in handwriting produced under the influence of alcohol are generally compatible with one another. The causes of the controversies that arose among researchers regarding the specific changes occurring in the handwriting of intoxicated individuals are also described. It is proposed that the results of these foreign studies and the reasons for their discrepancies be taken into account in the development of appropriate forensic techniques.
